    Angelo State University Athletics

    The Angelo State University Rams compete in the NCAA Division II and the Lone Star Conference. Men’s sports include football, basketball, baseball, cross country, and track. Women’s sports include volleyball, basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, and track. Men’s sports have been offered at Angelo State since 1929, and women’s sports since 1975. The Rams have competed in the NCAA tournament for every sport except women’s soccer and baseball. In its athletic program’s history, Angelo State has captured two national titles, three second-place finishes, seven rankings in the national top ten, state titles, conference championships, and numerous awards and recognitions. Angelo State has produced 182 All-Americans, 22 Academic All-Americans, and an Academic All-American of the Year. Most recently, the Angelo State softball team won the 2004 NCAA Division II National Championship. ASU inaugurated its first ever Athletic Hall of Honor Class in 2003, including former NFL football star Pierce Holt. The NCAA Division II high jump championship was won by ASU’s Will Littleton in 2003 and 2004. The women’s track team defeated 20-year champions Abilene Christian to win their first Lone Star Conference title in 2004. The baseball program was added in 2004.

Women’s sports include volleyball, basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, and track & field. The sports teams are supported by a spirit squad, which includes a cheerleading team, a dance squad, and a marching band. The team nick-name is the Rams for men and Rambelles for women.

    Athletic facilities at Angelo State University include the newly constructed Junell Center/Stephens Arena, which houses indoor sports, weight rooms, and a sports medicine center, among other uses; outdoor soccer, softball, and baseball fields; and a multi-purpose sports complex. Football games are played at the San Angelo Stadium.

    The athletic program was founded in 1929 for men and 1975 for women. Among the championships and awards that Angelo State University has received are the women’s softball NCAA Division II National Championship and individual championships in track in 2004. The football team won conference championships in 1978, 1984, 1987, 1999, and 2000.
